Time on one island
Many travellers choose a single island and use it as the foundation for their trip.

This allows time to properly settle into the destination and experience it at a slower pace. A stay in Bali, for example, can still include contrast by combining coast and countryside, or wellness and beach time, without needing to move across the wider country.

Combining islands
Others combine two or more islands to create a broader journey. The contrast between islands is often what makes Indonesia so rewarding.

A journey might combine Bali and Lombok, add Komodo for a more adventurous element, or include Sumba for a stronger sense of seclusion. These combinations can feel extraordinary when the transfers are carefully planned.

The key is ensuring travel enhances the experience rather than dominating it.

Indonesia can be visited throughout much of the year, although conditions vary across the archipelago.

Many areas work particularly well during the drier months, especially when beach time, sailing or outdoor exploration are important. However, weather patterns are not identical across every island, and conditions can vary depending on the region and time of year.

The ideal timing depends on which islands are included, how much time you plan to spend outdoors and whether your journey is focused on relaxation, culture, diving or wider exploration.

Seasonal planning is particularly important when combining islands, as the best route is not always the most obvious one.

Indonesia is best experienced at a measured pace.

The distances between islands, and the appeal of seeing more, can encourage travellers to do too much. But the strongest journeys usually allow enough time for each destination to feel meaningful.

A few well-chosen places will often create a richer holiday than an itinerary that tries to cover too many islands. The aim is to create contrast without losing the feeling of ease.
