Some travellers choose to focus on one part of California and experience it properly. A stay in Los Angeles can combine beach, culture, dining and neighbourhood exploration. A few days in Napa or Sonoma can create a slower, more indulgent wine country escape. Santa Barbara or Laguna Beach can work beautifully for a coastal stay with excellent hotels and a more relaxed atmosphere.

This approach suits travellers who want depth rather than distance, especially when the hotel and location are chosen carefully.

Journeys through the state

California is particularly well suited to multi-centre travel. A classic route might combine Los Angeles, the Central Coast and San Francisco, with time in Big Sur or Santa Barbara along the way. Another journey might pair San Francisco with Napa Valley and Yosemite, or contrast Palm Springs with the coast.

The key is not to underestimate the scale. California rewards movement, but only when the route is paced properly and the driving becomes part of the experience rather than the dominant feature of the trip.
