There are two lovely ways to enjoy the United States, and both work beautifully.

Staying in one place, a Napa estate, a desert resort in Palm Springs, an oceanfront hotel in Hawaii, is perfect for guests who want to properly unwind. Days are spent by the water, in the spa, or tasting at a handful of vineyards, with excursions out from a wonderful base rather than packing up every night or two.

Moving between regions is equally rewarding, and is a real strength of a country this size. Pairing San Francisco with the wine country, New York with New England, or Los Angeles with the desert gives guests a genuine sense of variety, big landscapes, characterful hotels and vibrant city life all within one trip. We take care of the internal flights, the driving distances and the timings so a multi destination holiday feels smooth and unhurried rather than rushed.

The right window depends entirely on where you are going, which is one of the advantages of a country this size. Late spring and early autumn are the loveliest times for California, New York and New England, with comfortable temperatures and the national parks at their best. The Deep South is at its most pleasant from March to May, and again through October and November, either side of the summer heat. Florida, Hawaii and the desert resorts of Palm Springs and Scottsdale come into their own from November through April, exactly when much of Europe is grey. There is somewhere in the United States worth being in every month of the year, and part of our job is matching the season to the trip.

The United States is generous, there’s a huge amount to enjoy, and the temptation is always to fit in one more city or one more park. The distances are real though, and the trips guests remember are rarely the ones that tried to cover the most ground. What tends to make a holiday truly memorable isn’t just the places visited, it’s the moments in between: a detour down a coast road, a long lunch that runs into the afternoon, watching the light go over the desert.
