A honeymoon or milestone escape

Many travellers come for the occasion.

French Polynesia is unmatched for this, and the classic pattern is a few nights on Moorea followed by a longer stay on Bora Bora, or a single stay at one of the private island resorts. It is the most expensive part of the region and worth doing properly rather than briefly.

An easy and sociable island holiday

Others want warmth, ease and good value.

Fiji delivers all three, with short transfers from Nadi by boat or light aircraft, resorts that genuinely welcome children, and a culture of hospitality that travellers remember as much as the beaches.

A quieter and simpler island

A smaller number are looking for somewhere less developed.

The Cook Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu offer smaller properties, fewer visitors and a slower rhythm, and they suit travellers who would rather have character and calm than polish.

The key is matching the island group to the occasion.

The South Pacific sits in the southern hemisphere and has two clear seasons, so timing matters more than the year round warmth suggests.

The dry season, from around May to October, is the best time to travel across the whole region, with lower humidity, more settled weather and comfortable temperatures. The wet season, from November to April, brings heat, humidity and the possibility of tropical storms, although rates are lower and rain often falls in short bursts rather than all day.

There are seasonal reasons to choose particular months too. Humpback whales visit Tonga between roughly July and October, and the shoulder months of May and October usually offer the best combination of weather, availability and value.

The South Pacific asks to be enjoyed slowly, and the transfers are the reason.

Reaching these islands takes time, and once you arrive there are often boat or light aircraft legs on top of the international flights. A resort that looks close on a map may be a further two hours away, so two islands within one group is usually the most a fortnight should attempt.

Seven nights in one place, or four and five nights across two, will nearly always feel better than three short stays. Many travellers pair the region with Australia or New Zealand, and in that case a week here at the end of the trip is the most rewarding way to use it.
