New Zealand - South Island

The South Island is the wilder and more dramatic half of New Zealand, and the experience changes completely depending on which parts of it you choose.

For some travellers, it is about Queenstown, the lakes and the mountains that rise straight out of them. For others, it is the fiords, the glaciers, the wine country and the wildlife that make the journey so distinctive.

The island can be experienced as a single stay in the lakes and mountains, a scenic self drive route linking four or five areas, or a wilderness trip built around remote lodges and the water. Each area has its own character, from social and alpine to empty, elemental and quiet.

A great trip to the South Island often comes down to choosing the right areas, the right time of year and the right balance between driving and time spent in each place.

Travel Guide

The first decision is understanding which parts of the South Island are right for you, rather than trying to drive the whole island.

Queenstown is the natural base for most first visits, set on Lake Wakatipu beneath the Remarkables, with Arrowtown, the Gibbston vineyards and quieter Wanaka close by. To the south west lies Fiordland, where Milford and Doubtful Sounds are the most striking landscapes in the country. Inland, the Mackenzie Country brings turquoise lakes, Aoraki Mount Cook and some of the clearest night skies anywhere, while the West Coast holds the glaciers and rainforest, and the north of the island offers Marlborough wine country, the Marlborough Sounds and the golden beaches of Abel Tasman.

Christchurch is the usual arrival or departure point, and the drives between these areas are long but genuinely beautiful. Once the route is settled, the choice of lodges and hotels becomes much easier.
