Travel across Australasia & the South Pacific

From harbour cities and vineyards to red desert, glacial mountains and some of the most beautiful lagoons on earth, Australasia and the South Pacific cover an extraordinary spread of country. It is the part of the world that asks the most of travellers in getting there, and repays it more generously than almost anywhere else.

At Curuvia, we plan journeys across Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific that make proper sense of the distances, combining exceptional hotels and lodges with routes that flow, so that the travelling becomes part of the holiday rather than the price of it.

Countries & Islands in Australasia & the South Pacific

Each destination offers a very different way to experience this part of the world, from reefs and red desert to alpine landscapes, geothermal valleys and island lagoons.

Australia

A country of vast distances and vivid contrasts, where harbour cities, the Great Barrier Reef and the red desert of the Red Centre can all sit within a single journey. Whether you want one stretch of coast or a route across several regions, the trip is shaped above all by which of them you choose.

New Zealand - North Island

The warmer and more cultural half of New Zealand, taking in Auckland and its vineyards, the subtropical Bay of Islands, the geothermal valleys of Rotorua and the volcanoes of the central plateau. Short drives and a gentle climate make it one of the most rewarding self drive destinations anywhere.

New Zealand - South Island

Mountains rising straight out of the lakes, the fiords of the south west, glaciers on the west coast and wine country in the north. It is the more dramatic of the two islands, and the long, beautiful drives between its landscapes are a large part of what people remember.

South Pacific Islands

Fiji, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands each offer a quite different version of the South Pacific, from overwater villas above impossible lagoons to quieter islands where very little has changed. Warm, unhurried and well worth building in properly rather than briefly.

How to Experience Australasia & the South Pacific

This is the furthest most travellers go, and the distances continue once you arrive. The region can be built around a single country and a proper stay in it, or as a longer journey linking two or three, and deciding which of those you want is worth doing early.

For travellers with two or three weeks, one country is often the more rewarding choice.

A fortnight in New Zealand’s South Island, two weeks along Australia’s east coast, or a week on a single South Pacific island allows the place to unfold at its own pace, with fewer flights and more nights in each hotel. It also leaves room for the lodges, resorts and vineyards that give this part of the world so much of its character.

When to travel

The seasons here are reversed, which is a large part of the appeal.

The southern summer, from December to March, brings the warmest weather to New Zealand and to Australia’s southern cities, and it is the best period for beaches, the lakes and long days outdoors. From May to October the tropical north of Australia and the islands of the South Pacific are at their driest and most reliable, and those months also suit the Red Centre. March and April are quieter and often the ideal compromise, with settled weather across both countries at once.

Our winter is their high season, so the most popular months and the best lodges book up a long way ahead. The best time to travel depends on which countries you are combining, and our specialists will help you find the right season for your journey.
