New Zealand - North Island

The North Island is the warmer and more cultural half of New Zealand, and the experience changes completely depending on which parts of it you choose.

For some travellers, it is about Auckland, the vineyards and the subtropical coastline of the Bay of Islands. For others, it is the geothermal landscapes, the Māori culture and the volcanoes of the central plateau that make the journey so distinctive.

The island can be experienced as a short city and coast stay, a self drive journey linking three or four areas, or a lodge led trip built around a handful of exceptional properties. Each area has its own character, from lively and urban to volcanic, green and deeply restful.

A great trip to the North Island often comes down to choosing the right areas, the right time of year and the right balance between driving and time spent in each place.

Travel Guide

The first decision is understanding which parts of the North Island are right for you, rather than trying to cover the whole island.

Auckland is the usual arrival point, with its harbour setting, its dining and the vineyards of Waiheke Island a short ferry ride away. North of the city, the Bay of Islands offers a subtropical coastline, sailing and two of the country’s finest lodges. In the centre of the island, Rotorua and Taupo bring geothermal valleys, Māori culture and the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park, while Hawke’s Bay and Martinborough are wine country, and Wellington closes the island with its arts, its coffee and its harbour.

Distances are manageable and most journeys are made by car, so the island rewards a route rather than a single base. Once the shape of that route is clear, the choice of lodges and hotels becomes much easier.
