Many travellers come to Cambodia primarily for Angkor.

A stay in Siem Reap allows time to explore the temples properly, ideally over several days and at quieter times such as sunrise, rather than rushing the highlights in a single visit. It suits those who want to focus on one of the world’s great cultural sites, with excellent hotels and dining close at hand.

Combining culture and coast
Others create a broader journey.

A route might combine Siem Reap with Phnom Penh for history and context, before continuing to the southern coast or an island for time to relax. Cambodia also combines naturally with neighbouring Vietnam or Laos for a wider Indochina journey.

The most successful itineraries keep the routing simple, allowing each place to add something distinct.

Cambodia is generally at its best during the drier months, from around November to April, when conditions for sightseeing and beach time are usually most reliable.

The early part of this period tends to be cooler and more comfortable for exploring the temples, while later months can become quite hot. The wet season, from around May to October, brings greener landscapes and fewer visitors, though heavier rainfall and humidity can affect how comfortable sightseeing feels.

The best time to travel depends on whether your priority is temple exploration, beach time or a combination of both.

Cambodia rewards a considered pace.

It can be tempting to treat Angkor as a single day’s sightseeing before moving on, but the temples reward time, and the country as a whole is best enjoyed without rushing. The heat, too, encourages a gentler rhythm.

A few well-chosen regions, with enough time to explore the temples properly and to relax afterwards, will usually create a richer journey than an itinerary that tries to cover too much. Cambodia should feel absorbing and warm, not hurried.
