Four small ships that stay after everyone else has sailed

Azamara builds its itineraries around time ashore: longer stays, more overnights, and evenings in port when the crowds have gone.

Travelling, not just touring

Four small ships, each carrying around seven hundred guests, built around a single idea: that the point of a cruise is where it takes you, and how long it lets you stay.

Azamara calls it Destination Immersion. In practice it means late departures, overnights in port, and harbours the larger ships cannot enter.

The port after dark

Most ships leave before dinner. Azamara routinely stays late or overnight, which gives you the part of a place that visitors rarely see: the restaurants filling up, the squares in the evening, the walk back to the ship along a quiet waterfront. Night touring is built into the programme rather than sold as an extra.

Harbours the big ships cannot reach

At this size the map opens up. Small Greek islands, Croatian and Turkish harbours, Scottish and Norwegian anchorages: places where a large ship would have to anchor offshore, or skip entirely. It is also why an Azamara itinerary usually reads like a list you have not seen before.

Rooms that feel residential

On Vista and Allura every guest has a veranda, and the suites are laid out more like apartments than cabins. Across the fleet the Aquamar Spa and Vitality Centre handles the wellness side, from treatments to a menu built around it. The ratio of crew to guests is among the best at sea.

An evening you could not book yourself

Most voyages include one AzAmazing Evenings event: a private performance or gathering arranged ashore for guests only, in a setting that is not usually open in the evening. A concert in a courtyard, a folk ensemble in a village square. It tends to be the night people talk about afterwards.

Long after the last coach has gone

Every popular port has two versions. The one between ten and four, shared with several thousand day visitors, and the one that arrives when they have all left.

Azamara is built around the second. Staying late, or overnight, turns a stop into an evening: dinner where the locals eat, a square that has emptied out, a walk back through streets that were shoulder to shoulder a few hours earlier.

It is the same island either way. It simply does not feel like the same place.

Meet the fleet

Eight ships in three broad groups: the two newest, the two built around the Culinary Center, and the smaller originals that get into the harbours nothing else can reach.

Azamara Journey

The ship that started the line, and the template for the three that followed. Around seven hundred guests, which is small enough to feel like a hotel and large enough to carry proper restaurants.

Prime C for steak and seafood, Aqualina for Italian, Discoveries as the main dining room, The Living Room on the top deck and The Sanctum Spa below. Included drinks and gratuities, and an AzAmazing Evenings event on most voyages.

Azamara Quest

Sister to Journey and identical in layout, so the difference between them is the itinerary rather than the ship.

Quest tends to work the longer and more unusual routes, which suits the size: harbours other ships cannot enter, and the time to stay in them. Same restaurants, same club like feel, same crew to guest ratio.

Azamara Pursuit

Pursuit joined in 2018 and opened up a run of new itineraries and maiden ports for the line.

The layout matches her sisters: Prime C, Aqualina, Discoveries, The Living Room and The Sanctum Spa. If your itinerary is somewhere Azamara has not sailed before, there is a good chance this is the ship doing it.

Azamara Onward

The newest of the four, and the only one with the Atlas Bar: a craft cocktail room with small plates that has become a reason to choose her.

Everything else is familiar. The same size, the same restaurants, the same late departures and overnights, with slightly fresher interiors throughout.
