How this journey is designed

This journey is built around one island with two very different sides.

You begin in Funchal, where the days are shaped by the old town, the market, the wine cellars and the gardens above the city. The walking and the exploring happen from here, including the levada trails and the ancient laurel forest inland.

After three nights you move west to Calheta, where the island opens up and the pace drops. The final four nights are quieter and sunnier, with sailing, cooking and long afternoons by the water, and no obligation to fill them.

Culture and activity first, then the space to enjoy it. That is the shape of the week.
