Staying focused
Greece often works best when the trip has a clear centre of gravity.

That might mean Athens followed by one island, a week in Crete, a slower stay in the Peloponnese, or a carefully chosen base in the Cyclades. Keeping the plan simple allows time for beaches, boat days, long meals, village walks and the quieter moments that make Greece feel special.

Island combinations
Island hopping can be wonderful, but it needs to be planned with care.

The best combinations usually stay within one island group, rather than jumping between distant parts of the country. The Cyclades can work well for a two- or three-island route, such as Santorini with Paros or Naxos, or Milos with Sifnos. The Ionian Islands have a different rhythm and are often better approached by choosing one main island or travelling by private boat. Crete can stand alone, or pair with Athens or a nearby Cycladic island if the timing works.

Greece has a long travel season, but timing matters, especially if the trip includes the islands.

Spring is excellent for Athens, the mainland, walking, archaeology and food-led touring, with warm weather and landscapes that still feel fresh. Early summer brings reliable sunshine and good sea conditions before the busiest weeks of the season. July and August suit travellers who want heat, beach life and a lively island atmosphere, although the most popular islands can be busy and accommodation should be chosen carefully.

The Ionian Islands are greener and can have a slightly different weather pattern from the Aegean. Crete has one of the longest seasons, while mountain and mainland areas are better suited to spring, autumn or more specialist winter travel.

The right time to travel depends on whether the priority is swimming, sailing, ancient sites, walking, food, island atmosphere or a quieter experience.

It is easy to imagine a journey that includes Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes and the Peloponnese, but that kind of itinerary can quickly become more about transfers than experience. Ferries, domestic flights, port times and seasonal schedules all need to be respected.

The most enjoyable Greek holidays often leave room for the unplanned: a long lunch by the water, a late swim, a small village, a boat trip, a walk to a viewpoint or an evening that stretches naturally into the night.

A good itinerary should feel generous rather than overloaded. Greece has enough variety to create contrast, but the real pleasure often comes from giving each place time to settle.
