Many travellers come to Kenya for the safari itself.

A journey can combine two or three reserves to experience different landscapes and wildlife, staying in camps and lodges chosen to match the setting and style you want. Private conservancies, in particular, offer exclusivity, off-road driving and walking safaris that busier parks cannot.

Combining safari and coast
Others pair the safari with time on the Indian Ocean.

Ending a wildlife journey with a few nights on the coast creates a natural rhythm, balancing early mornings and game drives with beaches and rest. Kenya also combines well with neighbouring Tanzania for a broader East African journey.

The key is creating a route that feels natural, allowing each reserve to add something distinct.

Kenya can be visited throughout much of the year, though the experience varies by season.

The dry seasons, from around June to October and again from December to March, are generally regarded as the finest for wildlife, when animals gather around water and vegetation is sparser. The great migration typically reaches the Masai Mara between around July and October, though timing varies each year.

The coast is warm year-round, with its own seasonal rhythm.

The best time to travel therefore depends on which reserves you include, whether the migration is a priority and how you want to combine safari with the coast.

Kenya rewards a considered pace.

It can be tempting to include as many reserves as possible, but moving too often means more time in transit and less time enjoying each place. Wildlife, in particular, rewards patience and unhurried days.

A few well-chosen reserves, with enough time in each and perhaps some coast at the end, will usually create a richer journey than a route that constantly moves. The aim is variety without losing the sense of immersion.
